PROTOCOL FOR ONLINE COMMUNICATION

When participating in online discussions, it is important to follow some simple do’s and don’ts of etiquette. A useful acronym to remember is WRITE - Warm, Responsive, Inquisitive, Tentative and Empathetic. Above all, be courteous to your fellow peers and respect the diversity of opinions.

Here are a few rules of thumb to add value to your posts:

  • respond to posts initiated by the official moderators leading the discussion (within the already established thread- click on "reply")
  • try to participate frequently
  • try to extend the conversation by analyzing and building on previous posts rather than commenting in isolation (within the already established thread- click on "reply")
  • if a new topic emerges - try to initiate discussion by posting a new discussion topic in the forum
  • try to make posts that are relevant and factually correct, perhaps using references to literature or personal experience to support your points
  • try to make clear and concise comments formatted in a style that is easy to read
