Science makes a significant contribution to our welfare and prosperity. Insights and discoveries of the past, such as the light bulb and penicillin, brought about major improvements to our lives. More recently, advances such as the internet and biofuels have done likewise, providing new insights and revealing new applications. Discoveries in less tangible form also enrich our lives: knowledge about the universe, the functioning of society, and new information about our past, for example.
